A real money slot takes a real stake on every spin, and a random number generator decides the result. Two numbers describe the maths: RTP and volatility. When you play with a bonus, the bonus terms often matter more than the game. Wagering, maximum bet and cashout caps decide whether a win can ever be withdrawn.
The table further down lists 15 casinos that we found in a public licence register and have not ruled out. We have not tested any of them, so we do not suggest any of them.
How a real money slot works
Each spin is decided by a random number generator, or RNG, at the moment you press the button. Spins are independent. A slot is never “due” a win after a losing run, and a big win does not make the next spin less likely to pay.
Free demo versions usually run the same game logic. They are a good way to learn the features without risking money. The difference is that a demo cannot pay out, and the RTP setting at a given casino may not match the demo you tried elsewhere.
What RTP means
RTP stands for “return to player”. It is the share of all stakes a slot is designed to pay back over a very large number of spins. A slot with 96% RTP pays back, on average, 96 for every 100 staked. The other 4 is the house edge. Many guides treat about 96% as a typical figure for online slots.
RTP is a long-run average. It says nothing about one session, where results can swing far above or below it. The same slot can also run at different RTP settings at different casinos. Check the figure in the game’s own information or help screen before you play, at the casino where you play.
What volatility means
Volatility describes how a slot spreads its payouts. Two slots can share the same RTP and feel very different. Some providers show volatility in the game’s information screen, often as a word or a scale. Volatility does not change the RTP.
| Volatility | Typical wins | Losing runs | What it means for your budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low | Small and frequent | Usually short | A balance tends to last longer |
| Medium | A mix of small and larger | Moderate | Swings are noticeable but not extreme |
| High | Rare, some very large | Can be long | A balance can run out before a big win arrives |
You may also see “hit frequency”. It is the share of spins that return any win at all, even a win smaller than the stake.
Types of real money slots
- Classic slots. Usually three reels and few paylines, with simple rules.
- Video slots. Usually five reels, with bonus rounds, free spins and multipliers.
- Variable-ways and cluster slots. The number of ways to win changes on each spin, or wins come from groups of matching symbols.
- Progressive jackpot slots. Part of each stake feeds a jackpot. The base game often pays back less to fund it.
What the bonus terms say
- Wagering. The amount you must bet before bonus money can be withdrawn. 35x deposit + bonus is very different from 35x bonus only.
- Game contribution. Slots usually count 100%. Table games often count far less. AeroBet’s reported terms require 35x on slots but 700x on most table games. SevenPlay’s require 30x on slots and 300x on most other games.
- Maximum bet. While a bonus is active, a spin above the limit can void the bonus and its winnings. AvoCasino and Luckygem list EUR 5. GreatSlots’ terms set EUR/USD 5 with bonus money.
- Cashout caps. Some bonuses cap what you can withdraw. AeroBet lists 5x the bonus, SevenPlay 7x and Bino.bet 10x.
- Deposit turnover. Some sites require you to bet your deposit several times before any withdrawal. Crownslots lists 3x and Lucknation 5x.
A worked example
You deposit 100 and get a 100% match, so your balance is 200. With 35x wagering on deposit + bonus, you must bet 7,000. At 96% RTP, the average loss on 7,000 of bets is 280. That is more than the whole balance. On average, the wagering costs more than the bonus is worth. Try your own numbers in our wagering calculator.
Common slot myths
- “Time of day matters.” It does not. The RNG works the same at every hour.
- “Bigger bets raise the RTP.” On most slots the RTP is the same at every stake. Some jackpot slots do require a higher stake to qualify, so read the rules.
- “A slot that has not paid for a while is about to.” Each spin is independent, so past spins tell you nothing.
How we chose
- We started from the 58 casinos in our licence audit.
- We kept the 15 whose domain we found in the Anjouan public register (1,298 rows when we downloaded it in October 2026) and whose position is “not yet tested”. We read each end date: Lucknation’s has since passed.
- Game counts, providers and wagering are as stated by the casino or the review site named. They often differ between sources.
- Our positions follow the method on our how we review page.

What to watch out for
- A big library is not a safety signal. Some of the largest game counts in our data belong to sites we do not recommend. PlayCasino reports 13,000+ games at SlotLair and 12,000+ at LegionBet, and Casino.org reports 11,000+ at Glorion. We found no verifiable gambling licence for any of them.
- Large wins in instalments. LCB reports that Dazard may pay large wins in monthly instalments. GreatSlots’ terms allow instalments for wins of EUR/USD 20,000 or more within 30 days.
- Early withdrawal. GreatSlots’ terms allow it to deduct the whole bonus if you withdraw before finishing the wagering.
- Play within limits. Slots are for adults only (18+, or older where your law says so). Decide your budget before you start, and set a deposit limit. Our responsible gambling page lists tools and helplines.
FAQ
Can you win real money on slots?
Yes, single spins and sessions can win. Over time, the house edge means players as a group lose. Treat any money you stake as the cost of entertainment.
What is a good RTP for a slot?
Higher RTP means a smaller house edge over the long run. Compare the RTP of the same game at different casinos, because many slots come in several versions. No RTP setting makes a slot profitable on average.
Are online slots rigged?
At a regulated casino, games are expected to use a tested RNG and to pay at the stated RTP. At a site with no licence, no regulator checks this. That is one more reason to confirm a licence in the regulator’s own register.
Does a bonus change a slot’s RTP?
No. The RTP stays the same. But wagering makes you bet much more in total, so your expected loss grows with every spin you need to complete it.
Which casino should I play slots at?
We do not name one. We have not tested any of these casinos. Each review covers what we know about the game library, the terms and the licence.
Gambling is entertainment, not a way to make money. Set a deposit limit before you play. If you have self-excluded in your country, an offshore casino will not honour it, so please do not use one to get around it.
